Job Description:
Sappi Southern Africa – Forests requires a Research Forester – Wood Properties to effectively manage the wood properties team to complete wood properties projects that are of high quality, delivered timeously while maintaining SHEQ compliance.

- Complete weekly timesheets/ leave for a team
- Responsible for team compliance (including training) and safety on high-risk tasks (tree felling, chipping)
- Obtain quotes and complete purchase documentation according to Admin BPOs and within budget constraints.
- Carry out tasks related to wood sampling projects within set timeframes such as sample collection, accurate sample labelling and measurements, in both KZN and Mpumalanga.
- Complete projects with written reports including basic data analysis
- Compile and execute detailed monthly reports
- Participate in weekly meetings to ensure implementation of the monthly plan of operations
- Responsible for labour requisition, and day-to-day management of own and contract staff to ensure timeous completion of weekly tasks. Liaise with external service providers/contractors to ensure completion of wood properties activities
- Ensure that complete records are maintained of all research sampling and processing activities.
- Update and maintain wood properties databases
- Maintain and/or improve staff morale and output which includes ensuring appropriate training of subordinates to improve skills related to job performance.
Qualification & Experience:
- A valid Driver’s license
- Harvesting experience will be advantageous
- National Diploma in a relevant science
- Up to 2 years relevant experience in Forestry / Research environment
