Job Description:
South African Population Research Infrastructure Network (SAPRIN) is a national research infrastructure and a unique research platform aimed at strengthening evidence for health and social policy and building science in the country by providing a dynamic infrastructure for research and training. It currently has five Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) nodes and two more will be added by 2025.
This job is designed to manage leadership succession within SAPRIN as the original SAPRIN SARIR champions and current Director and Co-director relinquish their positions in support of a new SAPRIN leadership model. Technical leadership is needed to implement and maintain the challenging standardized population surveillance protocol in all nodes, and strategic scientific leadership is needed to grow the research user base and scientific output of SAPRIN with effective public engagement to maximise the policy impact of SAPRIN’s research findings and harmonized data.

- Oversee renewal of contracts for key staff
- Lead on promoting access to the SAPRIN research infra-structure by the national research community
- Oversee revision and quality of SAPRIN communications, including websites and funder reporting
- Lead on evaluating research output of individual SAPRIN nodes
- Deputize for SAPRIN directors at DSI, SAMRC and national meetings when delegated
- Lead on risk management
- Manage process to review and revise KRA’s and promotions within SAPRIN
- Promote, review, evaluate, discuss, and recommend research funding applications for multi-nodal research studies
- Monitor budget and expenditure on SAPRIN cost centres
Job Requirements:
- Have knowledge and experience in Population Science, Epidemiology and/or Public Health
- 5 years research management experience
- Be a mid-career scientist with a PhD
- Have demonstrated emerging leadership qualities as a team leader within research projects
- Have successful research applications, or be a co-applicant on a larger research grant.
- Have the interest and capabilities to assist with management of the Unit
