Job Description:

One of the three key priorities identified in ALA’s 5-year strategic plan – to be delivered by 2025 – is “Unleash The Network” where we seek to foster connections across the Alumni community and promote collaboration that will lead change on the African continent. The Head of Alumni Engagement joins the ALA team at a pivotal junction, midway through the implementation of this 5-year strategic plan, where the focus will be to build a world-standard Alumni Office with the strategy, systems and processes required to cater for the needs of a growing alumni body. At this point in time we have over 1000 alumni spread across the world – we need to strengthen this community and enable the young leaders in our network to continue to be inspired by ALA’s mission, to connect with each other and work together to make change happen.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership and execute on community management priorities, which will include owning the Alumni experience from Day 1 of students joining ALA
  • Build a community culture that keeps alumni connected to each other (e.g., through mentorship programs) and to the institution
  • Ensure effective database management (including accuracy and privacy)
  • Engagement programs in other organizations and understand drivers of success and key challenges;
  • Alumni fundraising: Work with the Strategic Relations team at ALA in a comprehensive strategy for fundraising for ALA alumni
  • Manage the annual ALA Gives Back campaign and other fundraising campaigns during the year
  • Generate programs and initiatives to enhance alumni giving
  • Drive student-focused fundraising programs on campus
  • Work with the Head of Marketing to map out existing ALA Alumni Social Media platforms (Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp Groups, etc.) and consolidate/ reorganize in line with best practice and lessons learned from key network success factors;
  • Run the team’s activities on a day-to-day basis;

Job Requirements:

  • Experience in online community management is desired;
  • Excellent skills in the MS Office Suite including Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook; experience with Salesforce a plus.
  • Results oriented with a keen focus on understanding and measuring success;
  • Experience in working on Alumni-related programs/initiative is strongly desired;
  • A passion for ALA and its mission
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive and maintain positive mind-set in a fast-paced environment;
  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects while managing conflicting priorities and deadlines;
  • Driven, detail-oriented and with strong verbal and written communication skills;
  • Fundraising experience is an advantage
  • Experience in event coordination (online and in-person) is desired;
  • Strong team player with humility: ability to roll up sleeves and get things done no matter what the task; helps colleagues where needed, collaborative not competitive.
  • Lifelong learner: delights in learning and seeks to grow.
