Job Description:

  • The Communication Specialist is responsible for actively identifying and managing issues and short-term projects that could affect the operational requirements and outputs of Anglo American Platinum through evaluation, research, and proactively managing those
  • Provides support to the communications manager in ensuring alignment and consistency with the development and implementation of communication strategies, campaigns, events, and the management of communications channels (both internal and external)
  • Provide support to teams across the business with their communication and engagement responsibilities in support of specific strategic objectives and projects
  • Responsible, in collaboration with the comms manager and other team members, in ensuring quality content across all channels, including the community newspaper, newsletters, Engage in compliance of deadlines

Job Responsibilities:

  • Research, establish, and manage complex communications issues
  • Gather, prepare and gain approval of content for our channels such as Engage, newsletters, community newspapers, Eureka, website, etc.
  • Active engagement across the operation to identify communications opportunities
  • Work directly with highest levels of organisation management and with various functional heads to coordinate short term projects, which generate effective relations
  • Obtain information, coordinate projects, clarify issues, make referrals, and process requests directed through Corporate Affairs & Sustainable impact
  • Review all external publications and technical papers to ensure consistency of message and quality of output
  • Through interpreting strategy, drive existing and potential issues that could impact business directives and outcomes
  • Manage risk assessment and highlight projects or issues that require re-engineering or refocusing
  • Interviews experts on potential and existing issues, to gather information which will be shared through internal and external communication channels
  • Exercise judgment on a wide range of issues and projects that could impact Platinum or Group activities
  • Deliver benchmarked communication solutions in support of group issues
  • Production (writing and editing) of content for both print and electronic communication
  • Manage a number of diverse special projects simultaneously and meet deadlines on each to ensure accuracy and timeliness and effectiveness of assigned projects, and attention to details
  • Develop factually and technically accurate research data and materials

Job Requirements:

  • Ability and willingness to work long and irregular hours
  • Regular travel may be required
  • Remains abreast of the latest developments in technology and social media to use it to the benefit of the business
  • Ability to act for the communications manager as and when required

Qualification & Experience:

  • Mining industry experience a plus, but not essential
  • Experience in working with different cultures and business environments
  • Experience in engaging community stakeholders, or extensive community communication experience would be an advantage
  • Proven experience of interfacing with and influencing colleagues and senior management
  • Mining industry experience a plus, but not essential

  • Degree / Diploma in Communications, Journalism
  • 3 years’ experience in leading and supporting the delivery of effective communications strategies
  • Experience in dealing successfully with external stakeholders
  • Postgraduate qualification an advantage
